The Danish Metal Ligaen Frederikshavn White Hawks announced the signing of former OKC Barons Russian defenseman Kirill Tulupov on February 2nd following his release from the Phoenix Coyotes ECHL affiliate Gwinnett Gladiators. Last season Frederikshavn finished 2nd in the league standings and made it to the playoff Finals where they lost to SønderjyskE in a best of 7 for the Danish Championship. Currently Frederikshavn is ranked 3rd in the league standings: 37 games, with 19 wins, 9 losses, 4 OT wins and 5 OT losses.

Tulupov was unable to join the team earlier this month as he had to wait for his Visa to allow him to travel into Denmark, as well as acquire a Danish residence and work Visa. The documents had been delayed due to the rush of Visa requests during the Olympics in Sochi, Russia this month. Today the White Hawks announced that they have acquired his residence and work Visa and are now just awaiting Tulupov’s Visa stamp in Moscow before he travels to Denmark, which is expected to be on Tuesday.

Earlier today there had been mention of Tulupov possibly arriving today if his Visa was ready in time, and even the possibility that he might play with the team. This sounds strikingly familiar to his experience with the Arizona Sundogs last February when his Visa arrived just before game time after a “severe get-back-in-shape practice that morning.” He thought the coaches were joking when they shared the news on the bus ride into the arena late that afternoon. He laughed, “I thought oh, it’s a funny group of guys! They couldn’t be serious because I have no legs to play hockey!”

All the best in Denmark, Kirill!

Update Feb. 26 – 5:20pm CT — Tulupov arrived in Denmark Tuesday evening and practiced with the team on Wednesday.

And now if anyone can tell us how to catch a few White Hawks’ games online?!
