Bunz mask right and chin

Tyler Bunz: 2013-14

Tyler Bunz’s 2013-14 mask is designed by David Arrigo who also designed his mask last season which featured the homage to the Edmonton Oilers’ glory days highlighting two goaltending legends in the team’s history, Grant Fuhr and his backup, and later replacement goaltender, Bill Ranford. While this season’s mask is a step in a different direction from the classic homage mask from last season, it has the very welcome representation of the Oilers’ ECHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors’ logo. In all, the Edmonton Oilers, the Oklahoma City Barons and Bakersfield Condors are all three prominently featured on Bunz’s mask.

Arrigo’s design is clean and well-organized which allows the major elements to stand out far better from afar displaying a large Oilers Oil drop logo on the right, a large OKC Oil drop logo on the left, and the Bakersfield Condors logo featured at the top, with Bunz’s traditional use of his name on the chin against a white backdrop. The dark orangish-brown-blue crude oil like background along the top provides a beautiful rich contrast to the crisp logos on either side. Well done!

Tyler Bunz’s 2013-14 Mask:

Front and Chin: From the front you can immediately see Bunz’s name spelled out along the chin and at the top above the grill is a dark orange-brown richly colored backdrop with the Bakersfield Condors’ logo. The Condor, with white ruff around the neck, is perched above the team name, clutching a hockey stick in its talons, one of the better (fun!!) logos in the minors.

Top: The Bakersfield Condors logo appears at the top of the mask over a thick red racing stripe, flanked by thinner white strips to either side. At either side of the logo is a primarily orange background with browns and blues resembling mottled crude oil running to the back of the mask.  — By the way, if you have never seen the clip of the Condors’ Queen Victoria on the loose, you missed the best hockey event EVER! Enjoy.

Backplate: On the backplate is a touching tribute to Bunz’s friends, teammate and family: on the left — Mitch Tanner (1992-2008), Kristians Pelss (1992-2013) and his aunt Doris Bunz (1960-2013), with light blue cross beneath. On the right is a quote based on an old Irish Blessing (and quoted by George Jung in the movie Blow), over a light blue cross:

May the wind always be at your back
and the sun always upon your face.
And may the wings of destiny carry you
aloft to dance with the stars.
