Niko Hovinen: 2012-13

  • Designer: Drummond Custom Airbrush

Niko Hovinen, a native of Helsinki, Finland, joined the OKC Barons in late January and only recently received his newly painted mask designed by Drummond Custom Airbrush based in Pennsylvania. OKC fans were able to see the mask for the first time when it debuted on April 21st when Hovinen was in goal that evening to shutout the Houston Aeros 3-0.

Hovinen appreciates American Heavy Metal music without a doubt. His previous mask with the Philadelphia Flyers organization featured Mötley Crüe, and now his new mask with the Oilers Organization carries on this Heavy Metal and Rock theme in a classic black and white color scheme with hints of blue. At first glance the crisp, clean design is a tribute to two famous musicians, Kurt Cobain and Slash, but as you begin to look closer at the overall design there is another underlying theme — that of opposites. The duality of white and black, light and darkness, right and left, and yes, even good and evil — angels and demons. Keep this in mind as you look at each side, right and left. What a brilliant underlying concept to a beautifully executed mask.

Note: Photographs of Hovinen’s Flyers Mask, also designed by Drummond Custom Airbrush, appears at the end of the gallery courtesy of Steven Christy.

Mask Left Side: Covering the left side of Hovinen’s mask is a black and white highly detailed portrait of Kurt Cobain, the leader of the group Nirvana the Seattle Grunge Rock band, who committed suicide in 1994. Cobain stares directly at the viewer, intense and serious, starkly portrayed in dark and light.
