The OKC Barons defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins last night 4 – 1 in the first game of their two game match-up this weekend. The first goal of the night was scored in the first period at 2:41 on a power play by OKC Barons Gilbert Brule, assisted by Tremblay and Helmer. Grand Rapids right winger Chris Conner scored a short time later at 5:27, with assists by Exelby and Pare. Near the end of the first period OKC Barons Philippe Cornet scored his first goal of the night at 17:47 on a power play, with Hartikainen and Helmer assists, ending the first period with a score 2-1.
Near the end of the second period, Cornet scored his second goal of the night at 19:44, with Kevin Montgomery assisting. The game score would remain 3-1 until the end of the third period when Teemu Hartikainen scored an empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining. He was assisted by Josh Green, and the final score was 4-1.
Barons’ goaltender Yann Danis stopped 26 of 27 shots on goal and the Griffins goaltender Joey MacDonald stopped 27 of 30 shots on goal.
Oklahoma City fans are growing accustomed to watching Philippe Cornet’s multiple goal games and are looking forward to many more! Last night Bryan Helmer, OKC Barons captain, also had two assists and Teemu Hartikainen had one goal and one assist. The three stars of the night were Philippe Cornet, Yann Danis and Bryan Helmer. An interesting note on Bryan Helmer — he currently holds the AHL record for career points by a defenseman with 538 at the start of this season. Let’s see if we can help Helmer break 600 this year!
Jeff Petry was welcomed back to Oklahoma City with a big round of applause. He played 41 games in OKC last season and was a favorite among fans last year as seen by the many Petry jerseys in the stands.
The Barons meet the Griffins again tonight at 7pm in Cox Arena.
