The OKC Barons got off to a rough start against the Houston Aeros in the first period bringing back memories of last season when the Aeros beat the Barons 9 out of their 10 games. Some slipshod puck handling on the Barons part and a strong defense by the Aeros kept the game at 0–0 until late in the first period when Ryan Martindale scored off an assist by Captain Bryan Helmer. Four minutes later Dan Ringwald scored to bring the first period to an end with the score 2-0.
With under 9 minutes into the 2nd period Tyler Pitlick scored his first goal of the night with Hunter Tremblay and Mark Arcobello assisting. Pitlick scored again in the third on a power play to bring the final score 4–0, with assists from Ringwald and Arcobello.
Barons goaltender David LeNeveu saved all 11 shots and Olivier Roy, who replaced LeNeveu halfway through 2nd period saved 10, for a total of 22 shots by the Houston Aeros. Dennis Endras and Darcy Kuemper were the Houston Aeros goaltenders for the night. Kuemper is a very tall goalie at 6′ 4″ and played well as their backup goaltender for the night, saving 12 out of 13 shots.
Late in the game word began to filter out about the Edmonton Oilers defensemen injuries, Ladislav Smid and Taylor Chorney were both injured on plays, and Taylor Fedun broke his leg during a touch icing. Sad news for the Oilers.
