Yesterday it was reported that Nikolai Khabibulin dropped his appeal to charges of extreme DUI and reckless driving and he will now serve a 30-Day sentence for DUI — 15 days in jail and 15 days under house arrest. If you are an Oilers’ fan, this is just icing on the cake. Many fans have been eager to send Khabi off to Siberia for a long enforced hiatus however the Oilers’ management and coach have continued to support their goalie. I have never been a fan to quickly jump to disastrous conclusions, after all, look at Tim Thomas. Boston was ready to ship Thomas out and he pulled off a miracle! But Khabibulin … I honestly think he needs some time off to either pull himself together or decide to … retire? go into another profession? move to Vegas?

Last season, having watched Martin Gerber play for the Oklahoma City Barons, I would have been happy thrilled to have Gerber in goal for the Oilers. Khabibulin’s stats were, well, just sad the last two years. With Khabibulin on thin ice it is assumed that the Oilers’ prospect goalie Devan Dubnyk will spend more time in the net for the Oilers this coming season, with the experienced veteran Yann Danis waiting in the wings in case of emergency.

I am looking forward to watching Danis play in OKC this fall – which is where we all assume he will be until called up to Edmonton to save the day. More to come once the season begins!
